Dimensions of Intercultural Relationships Homework
Intercultural Business Communications MSPM1-GC1020 Zuleika Cuevas Hofstede’s work serves as the base for other researches in cross-cultural psychology, inviting a number of researchers to study different aspects of international business and communication. These dimensions founded by Hofstede illustrate the deeply embedded values of diverse cultures. These values impact not only how people with different cultural backgrounds behave, but also the manner in which they will potentially behave when placed in a work-associated context. This is a brief overview of the six cultural dimensions: 1. Power Distance: This dimension explains the extent to which members who are less powerful in a society accept and also expect that the distribution of power takes place unequally. 2. Uncertainty Avoidance: It is a dimension that describes the extent to which people in society are not at ease with ambiguity and uncertainty. 3. Individualism vs. Collectivism: The focus of this dimension is on the question regarding whether people have a preference for being left alone to look after themselves or want to remain in a closely knitted network. 4. Masculinity vs. Femininity: Masculinity implies a society’s preference for assertiveness, heroism, achievement and material reward for attaining success. On the contrary, femininity represents a preference for modesty, cooperation, quality of life and caring for the weak. 5. Long-Term vs. Short-Term Orientation: Long-term orientation describes the inclination of a society toward searching for virtue. Short-term orientation pertains to those societies that are strongly inclined toward the establishment of the absolute truth. 6. Indulgence vs. Restraint: This revolves around the degree to which societies can exercise control over their impulses and desires.
CASE STUDY OF CULTURAL DIFFERENCES EXPERIENCED AT A CONSTRUCTION PROJECT IN GHANA Developing countries often lack native engineers, so foreign engineers are often deployed for sanitary and water systems for rural communities. This is necessary to reach the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDG) target for accessing sanitation facilities and clean water. However, often there is a failure to manage the project effectively due to existing cultural differences between local communities and foreign engineers. This case study of one such project in Eastern Ghana, supervised by a British engineer and project manager, explores some of the critical issues that can arise in a cross-cultural project. Hofstede’s cultural dimensions have been considered here, namely, masculinity vs. femininity, power distance, uncertainty avoidance and individualism vs. collectivism. Please provide examples of some of the issues the British engineer would experience based on each of the four dimensions while he is in Ghana. In this assignment, you will be articulating an understanding of the use of the concept (Dimensions of Intercultural Relationships). An ‘exemplary’ score (10 of 10 points) will reflect a foundational understanding of the diversity factors plan for managing cultural diversity; it should be focused from the perspective of a manager and include a discuss ion of the three key factors of this process. An ‘effective’ score (8 of 10 points) will reflect an understanding of the essentials of ‘cultural diversity management in an organization,’ and how it is executed. An ‘ineffective’ score (0-7.9 points) will reflect a paper that is poorly organized and difficult to read; one that does not flow logically from one part to another; one that does not discuss the assigned topic. If the paper is late, does not follow the required format (please see below,) has spelling and/or grammatical errors, includes technical terms that are not defined (or poorly defined,) and/or has a lack of clarity and conciseness, then the paper will be subject to point reductions. Submission Format:

Reflecting on the four gender-related videos for Module 2, write a well-organized and well-supported essay in which you help challenge society’s limiting gender narratives.
A well-organized essay has a beginning, middle, and an end. The beginning, or introduction, should include an opening sentence to grab your reader’s attention. Follow the opening sentence with a brief background on the topic or situation. In this case, it would be an explanation of gender roles, stereotypes, myths, and/or controls in society today. The last sentence of the introduction is the thesis statement. The thesis states the main point of the essay, which in this case, would be a statement affirming what needs to be done to limit gender narratives in society today.
A well-supported essay includes supporting points, details, and examples. For this essay, you must decide the best way to organize the body of the paper. Will you have a paragraph for each change? Will you divide the body of your paper into three or more paragraphs, one for each point? In any case, each body paragraph must support (explain) your reasoning (rationale) using specific details. Each body paragraph must have a topic sentence that states the main point of the paragraph.
The conclusion typically summarizes the main points of the essay and/or closes with a lasting impression that connects the reader to their world. In this case, where is our society headed? Is it too late for change?
Be sure to proofread your essay and edit for proper grammar, punctuation, diction (word choice), and spelling, as errors in sentence skills will lower a final grade. A grade will be determined based on the Module 2 Case expectations and the Trident University General Education rubric for English.
Papers must be double-spaced in Times or Times New Roman font (12 cpi) with standard one-inch margins.
The first person "I" is not used in a formal essay.
This essay must include a combination of no fewer than SIX in-text citations from the four assigned background sources for Module 2. Citations are to be a combination of direct quotations and paraphrased quotations with or without the author's name. No additional outside sources are to be used for this assignment

Questions and Topics We Can Help You To Answer: Paper Instructions:_________________________________________________________
The purpose of this assignment is three-fold: 1. To give you the opportunity to use the critical perspective to analyze a recent world event. 2. To give you the opportunity to use much of what you’ve learned this semester. 3. To help you better understand how people, movements or technology alter global cultures.
Choose a world event that occurred sometime between June 1, 2014, and February 11, 2015, and create a 1,000-word Wiki (approximately four pages, double-spaced) that explains, from a critical and global perspective, how the trajectory of this event was shaped by various information systems. Your goal is to evaluate the authenticity and credibility of information reported about this world event, so the essay should demonstrate your understanding of the diverse and complex nature of information, bringing order to, and maximizing the value of, the information for the audience it reaches. True to the title of this course, your essay will help you come full circle, in that you must explain how we know what we know about this world event. Thus, your essay should state a thesis, and your paper should analyze, how the event was covered or how information about the event was manipulated or suppressed. Finally, your essay should address what all that means on a global level.
Your writing should CRITICALLY examine HOW WE KNOW WHAT WE KNOW about your event. You need to challenge assumptions and expand the bounds of debate. Don’t just give a recap of the event. As voracious readers, we already KNOW what happened. Think instead of how the public got the information and how it might have been influenced – manipulated, suppressed, etc. Look at all the different players and facets involved in the event. Media, business, government, and the public from countries around the world may have been affected. Be careful of sweeping generalizations such as, “the media only want sensational stories”, or, “the government always lies.” Back up your claims with facts and expert opinions that are cited.
The concepts covered in the course should be the building blocks of your essay. Descriptions of events do not constitute analysis, which is the application of learned concepts to create new ways of looking at the world. How does the rhetorical triangle apply in your analysis? Who’s keeping secrets? Who’s penetrating secrets? Who’s manipulating information? How is information created, harvested, conveyed, and used?
For the first purpose, you should select an international event and do a thorough-going read of articles related to that event. Imagine that you are tearing apart an engine, piece by piece, examining every part for wear, tear and defective workmanship. Remember, information usually is a collection of a lot of moving parts. Challenge assumptions, expand the bounds of debate and make sure your analysis is beneficial to global society.
For the second purpose, how do the readings/web explorations this semester frame your examination of the event? What role, if any, did secrecy, revelation, intellectual property, freedom of information or suppression play in this event? Review readings and lecture notes to focus your thinking. Was there an example of how lies protect secrets or how secrets protect lies? Or, perhaps, how was rhetoric used to shape and convey the event? Use every lens you’ve been provided this semester to examine the event and select those that bring it into focus.
If you do that, you’ll be in great shape to tackle the third purpose, which is to determine how a person, movement or technology influenced this event. How did one or more of those alter the global culture? How do any (or all) of those bring desirable or undesirable change?
You should have a minimum of 6 sources, one of which is scholarly. Use MLA for your citation format, but don’t worry about indentations or margins (they’re a problem on WikiSpaces). Remember to examine everything that is covered in class: readings, assignments, discussions, tutorials, as potential tools useful to crafting your final assignment.
