The field of research in psychology is paramount. In the section on competencies, it is expected that psychologists understand and know the research in their fields, with particular attention paid to evidenced-based interventions. It is through research that evidence is gathered. There is a long history of unethical research that this competency attempts to address. Stringent ethical compliance is maintained through institution review boards (also known as human subjects review). It is easy for researchers to engage in behaviors that can have serious consequences.

The Department of Homeland Security is interested in using computers to identify suspected of money laundering operations within the United States. It would like to mine databases containing information about purchases and travel to detect patterns that may identify individuals who are engaged in, or at least planning, money laundering activity. It asks a panel of information security professionals to determine the feasibility of this project. A panel members say the most difficult problem will be determining what patterns of transactions to look for. As a panel member you suggest that it might be possible to construct a computer program that uses artificial intelligence to mimic money laundering activity. The program would determine the transactions needed to execute money laundering act. Once these transactions were determined, it would be possible to search databases resources to find evidence of these transactions. However, the major draw back is that there would be no way to narrow the scope of investigation to a few potential money laundering individuals and in fact a large population of individuals would needs to be searched potentially violated many individual's privacy.
As a information security professional assigned to this project, what would be the ethical and moral issues, from your perspective, of developing a computer program capable of violating a large population of individuals' privacy in order to identify and potentially catch a few suspected individuals of money laundering? How does this play into what we learned in this course about the issues related to violating an individual's privacy? What about the greater good for society by catching these money laundering individuals?

The best professional ethic is a proactive, preventative one. The ideal is to anticipate and solve problems before they occur. This kind of forward looking problem solving can be complex. It requires a thorough understanding of the situation or technology under consideration as well as a sophisticated view of the potential positive and negative consequences of the situation/technology. All technology, even the most beneficially intended, has negative consequences.
In the Social Impact Analysis (SIA) capstone paper assignment, you are given the opportunity to develop some of these forward looking skills as you analyze a leading edge design, product or concept (DPC) related to your field of study. You will be given latitude in your choice of topic (it will need to be approved). You are required to conduct the relevant, literature research necessary to understand the positive and negative implications of the design/product/concept. You are expected to consider the most credible arguments for and against your chosen topic. Finally, you will need to develop a well-reasoned position on the topic. You will need to explain why we should or should not deploy the design/product/concept you are analyzing. In developing your position, you will need to anticipate and respond to the most forceful objections to it. Keep in mind that any given technology can and often does have psychological, financial, and social impacts over and above its immediate physical impacts.
While the Social Impact Analysis term paper expresses opinions on an ethical issue, invoking the phrase "in my opinion" as a preface to a statement is not sufficient to express a valid opinion. Valid opinions are supported by literature research, well-reasoned logic and provable facts. Otherwise these statements of opinion are just expressions of your beliefs. An opinion is "valid" if and only if it is supported by relevant facts and well-reasoned logic. The problem with unsupported opinions is that many are based on misconceptions. The fact that many others may hold the same opinion does not make it a valid opinion.
You are asked to synthesize the insights you have been developing throughout this course. Specifically, you will be asked to apply one or more of the ethical theories we have discussed in this course. Additionally, you may choose to apply, in detail, the relevant canons from your discipline’s code of ethics. and insights developed from examining contemporary ethical challenges. The SIA Term Paper is the capstone assignment in this course.
Social Impact Analysis
Capstone Paper Proposal
Background:
In your Social Impact Analysis (SIA) Capstone Paper, you are asked to analyze a contemporary or leading-edge design, product, or concept (DPC). The best approach is to choose a DPC that has not yet been fully deployed and analyze its potential positive and negative social impacts. These include not only physical impacts (e.g. human health) but psychological, social, cultural, environmental, and financial impacts as well. The analysis entails looking forward and trying to make a well-reasoned case for or against the DPC in question.
You are allowed a fair amount of flexibility with respect to the topic you choose. It should be relevant to your discipline and feature a contemporary DPC which can include novel applications of well-established technologies.
Your topic proposal should be 300-500 words long and include a brief description of the DPC you have chosen along with a statement about why this topic is important and relevant to engineering ethics. It is not necessary to include references.
Instructions:
Submit your 300-500 word proposal using the SIA Capstone Paper Proposal link below as either a Word document
These were topics of previous papers that earned grades of 95-100.
You are free to use any of these for your paper topic if you choose to do so.
Identify a contemporary or leading edge design, product or concept (DPC) that has the potential for significant societal impacts if widely deployed. Your Social Impact Analysis Capstone Paper must provide formal research references to support the paper's content and conclusions on your chosen topic. Your literature resources might be scientific and engineering journal articles, popular publications, patents, copyrights, etc. You must use one of these standard citation styles (APA, MLA, Turabian, or Chicago) to cite your sources. Using Microsoft Word makes it very easy to create appropriate citations using one of these standards. You may use the Internet to do your research, but if you do, you must cite the source including a hyper link.
Example: Philosophy of Technology. Retrieved January, 2013, from Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy. Web site: http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/technology/ Your SIA Capstone Paper will require you to demonstrate originality and critical thinking about the ethical implications of your chosen topic.
The required outline for the SIA Term Capstone paper is provided in the link to the PDF file below.
Details:
Your topic proposal must be approved before submitting the final version of your paper. The paper must be a minimum of 2500 words in length including references. It must be submitted as a Word or PDF document using the TurnItIn link below. TurnItIn will return an originality report that indicates the percentage of your paper that is similar to or identical to other published work. The smaller the originality percentage the more original your paper. Quoting another author's words significantly increases your originality percentage and reduces your term paper score. A 0% originality score is as good as it gets. An excellent originality score is less than 10%. Scores in the range of 10% to 20% are acceptable. Scores greater than 20% will receive a zero for originality in the grading rubric. Anything you quote and/or paraphrase must be cited. Please use the citation style above you are most comfortable with. Papers that lack appropriate citation will be heavily penalized. Your references must include both 1) In-text citation and 2) works cited references at the end of your paper. You may use the Internet to do your research, but if you do, be sure to cite the source including a hyper link. Your paper must be clearly organized and include headers for major sections. You may submit revised papers multiple times until the due date; however, you will only receive feedback on your final submission.
This is the Proposal
Social impact paper (proposal) The social impacts of genetically engineered crops Summary Genetically Modified crops are organisms that are scientifically made through the insertion of a gene into the crop that has been obtained from external sources such as bacteria, plants and animals. The aim of this technology has been to give human the ability to overcome intractable barriers (psychological) through having sufficient food for all humanity in the world. As human population in the world is expanding, there has been a reasonable increase in production of food but also an increase in prices. By having crops with more favorable trait the natural ones, humanity can produce large quantities to feed everybody. The technology has attracted much attention especially from the media and there has been increased need for public to understand its psychological, social, cultural, financial and environmental effects. Significance of the research There is a feeling among many people in scientific community who feel that the positive impacts and safety of Genetically Modified crops have clearly been established. Other individuals feel that information on risks associated with this technology has been highlighted. The issue of genetically Modified crops is very important because it affects all humans around the globe. Given the increased pace with which the genetically modified crops production is advancing all the stakeholders including the farmers, policy makers and consumers face the challenge of having one vision on the role of this technology in food supply. Of more importance has been ethic issues result from human consumptions of foods that have been genetically been modified. There is a possibility that the introduction of new genes into plants may pose risks to human health, and other far reaching impacts, thus highlighting the need to focus on this topic. It does not help that information published in the media may be scientifically unfounded but believed by the most in the world population nevertheless.
This is what they said about the proposal
The ethics of genetically modified (GM) crops is a good topic but very broad. Narrowing the focus to one aspect of GM crops will make your paper easier to write. Keep in mind this is an engineering ethics paper. As you write your paper be sure your opinions are supported by critical thinking and external references. Otherwise your opinions are just belief statements. Another pitfall to avoid is spending too much of the paper describing GM crop technology and not enough analysis of the ethical issues. Following the specified outline will help keep the paper balanced. The originality score is the per cent of the paper's text that is similar to or identical to another author's published text. The smaller the percent the more original the paper. Good scores will be less than 15%. To improve your originality score, avoid direct quotes and just paraphrasing another author's words. Write your own thoughts and critical thinking backed up by external references. I look forward to reading your paper.
The Equality of Educational Opportunity Study (EEOS), also known as the "Coleman Report," was commissioned by the United States Department of Health, Education, and Welfare in 1966 to assess the availability of equal educational opportunities to children of different race, color, religion, and national origin. The report found glaring inequalities in education.
Please answer the following prompts:
Prompt 1 - What is achievement gap? Define the concept of education gap and explain it in your own words.
Prompt 2 - It has been over 50 years since the report was published - has the education gap increased or decreased? - support your answer by some data. Use statistics to show if the education gap has increased or decreased
Prompt 3 - Do you agree that schools perpetuate class inequalities - If yes, why? If no, why? - Discuss the issues in education and show how these issues might either increase or decrease inequalities. Example - how have programs such as "Head Start", "Busing", "No Child Left Behind" have affected schools. Have they helped or hurt the education gap. You need to use conflict theory if you want to argue that schools perpetuate inequality. You will find information in chapter 16. The chapter talks about programs implemented to improve education and also to reduce education inequality. Write about these programs to argue either in support or against the prompt.
Prompt 4 - From your own personal experience, what is the biggest challenge the education system in the US faces? How can it be improved (what is the solution? Here you have a chance to reflect on your personal journey. What was the greatest hurdle/ challenge you faced while attending school. Or what did you see going wrong in your school. Also write about some solutions
